The late years of Edvard Munch's life and legacy
Edvard Munch's personal experiences, particularly his dramatic and often traumatic relationships with loved ones, were central to his art. Later in his life, his art became even more introspective, focusing on themes of loneliness, old age and death.
The late years of his life
Beginning in 1916, Munch lived on his estate in Ekely, near Oslo, where he had his studio and plenty of space for creative work. Although known for his paintings, Munch was also an active printmaker, creating numerous lithographs, etchings and woodcuts.
Some of his most moving works from this period, such as "Between the Clock and the Bed" and "Self-Portrait: On the Threshold of Eternity," deal with themes of old age and transience. In these later works, Munch created a series of penetrating self-portraits that are full of reflection and introspection.
