Il compositore di musica barocca Alessandro Scarlattinasce a Palermo nel 1660.
Per gli storiografi del XIX secolo Scarlatti fu uno dei fondatori della scuola musicale napoletana, ovvero il maggiore compositore d'opera italiano tra la fine del XVII secolo e l'inizio del XVIII.
La sua vita si snoda tra Roma e Napoli, oltre ad alcune brevi soste a Venezia e Firenze.
A soli dodici anni inizia la sua prima formazione musicale a Roma sotto la guida del compositore Giacomo Carissimi.
Nel dicembre 1678 fu nominato maestro di cappella della Chiesa di S. Giacomo degli Incurabili (oggi S. Giacomo in Augusta).
Un mese più tardi ottenne la sua prima importante commissione in veste di compositore.
